How to tell the difference between a quality tanned cowhide… and inferior cowhides.
A cowhide that has been tanned properly – and there are many that aren’t – will not shed under normal wear. It has a clean sheen, and is tanned with a chromium process that provides suppleness and longevity underfoot.
An inferior cowhide will often have a chemical odor, is stiffer, has a duller coat, and often has an asymmetrical shape.
At Saddleman’s of Santa Fe, we stock only hand-picked, chromium-tanned hides from the most reputable tanneries in Brazil. These tanneries take great pride in their skill and craftsmanship, and have invested great care in producing only the finest cowhides.
Using chromium tanning to create a superior cowhide is an expensive process; there’s no way of getting around it. So if you are offered a deal on inexpensive cowhides, beware: they were produced with an inferior tanning process, and in time, your customers will know the difference.
Why does Brazil produce the best cowhides?
We choose to only stock Brazilian hides because of the superior tanning process and color selection. For generations the Brazilians have been producing cowhides. We are confident that the tanneries we are associated with produce the highest quality cowhides available in the market today, providing you with a soft, supple hide that will retain its' appearance for years to come.
You will not find Argentine or other inferior hides in our inventory. We assure only the finest quality for your customers.

Are cowhides easy to care for?
Generally used as a rug, a cowhide will give years of beauty and durability with minimal care. With light wear you can shake out the hide to remove dust or simply vacuum as you would any other rug without the brushes running.
The hide's natural oils resist staining, just wipe up any spills. If a stain should occur, use mild soap, warm water and a soft brush and rub with the grain of the hair. We recommend rotating your hide every 3 months in high traffic areas and not placing your cowhide in direct sunlight.
